Deconstructing the Documentary Peer Discussion (Blackboard). Documentaries have long been a source of educational entertainment. However, often there is no connection to the literature spanning the academic field. In this activity, your task is to draw connections between the assigned readings and documentary films. Specifically, you will assess the academic worthiness of the documentary by specifically highlighting segments within the film. You will then explain how the documentary connects to our material.

I evaluate your participation by looking at your overall analysis. I am assessing your ability to analyze and critique the documentary. Do not merely summarize the documentary. I should be able to clearly see the analysis of the documentary through an academic lens. If you only summarize the documentary, you have not completed the activity correctly. You need to share with the class if the documentary is accurate, elaborate on the issues presented, and set the documentary to the current literature on the topic. Think of it this way; answer this question Does this documentary help us and if so, how.  If a friend was having a difficult time with one of the books, which documentary would you tell them to watch? Your purpose is to write a discussion post explaining why you believe this documentary best stands for a selected book or why it does not.  The discussion submission will be at least 350 words.

Senior Seminar in Criminal Justice

Criminal justice is often in the news and many news stories relate to issues in community policing.  For this assignment, you are required to find a newspaper article or news story, published since January 1, 2016 that addresses community policing.

These stories should not be sensationalized articles (e.g., George Zimmerman, Lindsay Lohan) or brief articles from such sources as the Associated Press (Ive included some tips below to help you identify an appropriate article). Instead, these stories should illustrate some of the concepts and issues weve discussed in the first part of this course.

Include a link to the article in your post and write a 200 word description of the current issue with the court.  Next read and respond to another student with 100 response.  Engage with one another and do you best to make links between the news story and the material from this module.

Locating an article:

– The best place to find articles for this assignment will be in journalistic newspapers (e.g., The Atlanta Journal Constitution, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, etc.). For the most part, Id suggest you avoid simple articles on MSNBC, FoxNews, CNN, etc. or any political blog. Of course all of these news sites can provide good journalism, but for this assignment most of the articles will be inappropriate. 

– Avoid articles related to celebrated cases. The article you select will likely not be headline news. Instead, the articles you should have in-depth analysis of a particular issue.

– Avoid short articles (several paragraphs) from just sources as the AP, Reuters, etc.

Week 5 Instructions For Final Paper:
You are the manager of Acme Fireworks, a fireworks retailer who sells fireworks, puts on ground display fireworks, and large aerial display fireworks. The company started in the owners garage two years ago and now has 15 employees that you manage. The company started as a sole proprietorship, and the owner has never changed the entity. The owner has informed you that the company has received inquiries from several large businesses wondering if the company could create several fireworks displays on a regular basis. The owner told the inquirers that the company could fill such display orders, and a price per display was agreed upon. It was discussed that most of the cost for a fireworks display is for skilled labor, insurance, and the actual service of setting off the fireworks. No other details were discussed. The owner is anticipating that new employees will need to be hired, but he is worried that if the large orders for fireworks displays do not continue, the company will not have the funds to pay the new employees. The owner is now considering changing the business entity, but he does not know what entity to form or how to form it.

The owner has asked you to do the following:

Determine if the contracts with the businesses will be governed by common law or the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC), and explain why.
Analyze whether the owner formed a contract with the businesses, and apply the five essential elements of an enforceable contract.
Explain the potential personal liability to Acme Fireworks if a spectator is injured by a stray firework from a fireworks display.
Discuss the different employment types and relationships relevant to agency law, and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of each type specific to Acme Fireworks.

Understanding the foundation of Fourth Amendment protections will help you understand how the interpretation and line-drawing has changed over time to reflect public policy and changes in society. Prepare a 3-page paper, citing a minimum of three academically verified references and addressing the following points:

Describe the type of search the framers of the Constitution prohibited through the Fourth Amendment.
Explain how prohibiting that type of search would address historical problems.
Fast-forwarding to today, you are a police officer getting ready to request a search warrant for an apartment suspected to contain illegal drugs. You know that warrants are generally issued with a knock-and-announce requirement. You are concerned that the occupants will destroy the evidence, and you have heard that some judges will give police a no-knock warrant authorizing officers to enter certain premises without first knocking and announcing their presence or purpose. Using the HeinOnline legal research database for your state, locate one case that provides insight into whether this type of warrant should be requested, and apply the case to the determination by reaching a supported conclusion.
Assume the warrant was requested. Upon arrival you look in the window and see that the drugs are in plain view near the front door, out of reach of any of the occupants. Determine whether you should ignore this new information and enter without announcing. Cite one case from your state to support your position.

Video/Movie Analysis – On Catch Me If You Can

This assignment is designed to assess students ability to incorporate material from the module readings and apply them to assigned video or pop culture movie depictions about white-collar crime.

Each paper will be roughly two pages, demonstrating how specific elements of the media source can be used to illustrate concepts from any of the module readings of white collar crime.  Each paper should incorporate at least three concepts from the required module readings, using and citing at least two of the required course readings in each module.

The paper should include:
A minimum of 5 paragraphs, an introduction, 3 paragraphs in the body (one paragraph for each concept), and a conclusion. 
The introduction should include an attention grabber, a thesis statement, and a clear preview statement.
The body of the paragraph should allow you to introduce the course concept, explain the concept, demonstrate your understanding of the concept, and illustrate and analyze how the required video/movie relates to the concept.  Please use ONE body paragraph for each of the concepts (one main idea per paragraph).
A conclusion that summarizes the key ideas from the body of the paper.
The paper should include a properly formatted title and reference page.

This is not a critique of the video/film, but rather an opportunity for you to you utilize the content from the media source in order to help you engage with the main points from the module. 
You may choose any key concepts or main ideas from the required readings that you determine are most relevant or can be effectively applied to the individuals, scenes, and major themes conveyed in the video/film.

Please be sure to use APA formatting for the title page, in-text citations, and your reference. These pages are not included in the page count.
